WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF AN OPENER?

Safety Sensors

Every garage door opener born after 1993 has been installed with camera eyes at the bottom of the doors tracks that point at each other with an invisible beam that will not allow the motor to push the door down if it is interrupted. These “safety sensors” are designed to be a secondary safety feature to the bump and reverse feature already implemented in all properly functioning operators. If a box, rake, dog, child, car bumper, or random leaf from your neighbor’s tree is blocking one eye from seeing the other eye, the garage door will not close until the object is moved. Sometimes the camera eyes might be accidentally bumped and moved out of alignment, creating the same symptom as if there was an obstruction. All safety sensors have a sending camera eye and a receiving camera eye. Most manufactures have an LED light on the sending camera eye that stays constant as long as there is power going to it, but all garage door opener brands have an LED light on the receiving camera eye to signal that it is seeing the sending eye. If there is an obstruction or an issue with an eye, the receiving camera eye LED light will blink or completely go off. It is common for manufacturers to use different color LED lights to indicate which camera eye is the sending and which is the receiving. On Chamberlain garage door openers (Craftsman, Liftmaster), when there is a camera eye safety sensor issue, in addition to the garage door not closing, the light bulbs up at the opener’s head unit will flash off and on a few times.

Stripped Gears & Trolleys

Because the small motors used to guide garage doors up and down do not have the strength to continually lift more than eight pounds and the springs and rollers that actually move this large, heavy, metal wall will inevitably wear out and not do their job efficiently, operators usually come equipped with some sort of “self-destructive” mechanism that will wear out before the motor does. The hard plastic gear inside a Chamberlain (Liftmaster, Craftsman) chain or belt drive unit will strip out, the metal sprocket attached to the top of the gear and sprocket assembly will break if the garage door is riding rough through the tracks, or the garage door is heavy from loss of spring tension. In Chamberlain screw drive units, there is a plastic coupler that connects the rail to the motor that can break from stress and there is a plastic inner slide with plastic teeth that travel in the screw that will also file down due to the garage door stress. Other opener brands have their own unique plastic “self-destructing” device that will break if the garage door needs serviced. Genie and Overhead brands may use a trolley, and/or a coupler that may be replaceable, but if anything plastic within the head unit breaks on these brands, and most other brands, you will be likely replacing the entire operator. Our preventative maintenance tune-ups include the applications of the appropriate grease and lubricates to the gears and trolleys to help extend their life-expectancy.

Circuit/Logic Boards

Power surges and electrical storms can both be detrimental to the circuitry within the operators logic board. When a logic board has been damaged, it can give off one or many random symptoms. If the receiver built onto the board was the part that was damaged then the wall button could maybe still operate the garage door, but the remotes will not. If another part of the circuitry on the logic board was damaged, it may cause the opener to intermittently cease function or even occasionally open and close on its own. Whatever symptom the bad board is displaying, the solution will be to replace the entire board. Because the receiver is built into Chamberlain logic boards, all the remotes and keypads will need to be reprogrammed after a board is replaced. And because most other brands have a separate board and receiver, which will most likely both need replaced, the cost of replacing all the parts effected by electricity are usually close to the price of an entirely new garage door opener. It is a good idea to have a surge protector protecting your garage door opener from power surges.

Capacitors

A capacitor is a passive two-terminal electrical component used to store electrical energy temporarily in an electric field. In a garage door opener, the capacitor works like the starter in a vehicle; if the capacitor doesn’t ignite, then the motor won’t move. The most common cause for a capacitor to stop working would be too much stress from the garage door. Most of the time, the stress is caused by bad rollers, but sometimes the spring is to blame. When the springs relax, they don’t lift the complete weight of the garage door anymore, forcing the garage door opener to lift more weight than it is designed to lift. If the opener motor is forced to lift too much weight, too many times within an hour, the capacitor may explode. This explosion within the casing of the garage door operator sprays an extremely hot liquid that sometimes creates smoke that exits the head unit. There are hundreds of different sizes and MFDs for capacitors, but only around a dozen or so used in the many different brands of garage door openers. As with all other possible components for your garage door and garage door opener, we try to carry all the possible types of capacitors so we can repair your problem right away.

GARAGE DOOR OPENER ACCESSORIES

Remote Controls

These days there are more and more off-brand garage door openers being designed to meet home builders’ specifications and budgets. What was once a market that universal remotes were usually prepared for has evolved into a wild west of miscellaneous frequencies and programming components that are brand specific. If compatible, we still recommend having us program a universal remote to your existing garage door opener because whenever the day comes that it is time to replace the operator unit, you will already have a universally compatible remote that can be reprogrammed to the new garage door opener.

If a remote control you have been using successfully begins to stop working consistently, or stops completely, we recommend to try replacing the batteries. Replacing the batteries will not erase the memory inside the remote control, and should probably be done with brand new batteries every three years. Older remote controls may take a 9V battery and some may take a small 12V battery, but a majority of remote controls designed today take a round 3V CR2032 coin cell battery. Because there are many different brands of garage door opener remotes, we obviously recommend taking the remote apart first to see which exact battery the remote needs.

If the remote doesn’t seem to work anymore from a distance, but only up close, you may be experiencing an interference in the frequency waves in-between the remote and the receiver inside the circuit board of the garage door opener. This interference could be coming from any number of electronic household, or landscaping items that may be running on the same frequency as your garage door opener receiver. Christmas lights, alarm clocks, satellite dishes, military vehicles, and many other items can create an interference with many brands of openers, but the most common offender in frequency interruption would be the Verizon FiOS system receiver installed in garages, usually above the garage door opener. The newest models of Chamberlain garage door openers operate on a multi-frequency receiver system for the purpose of minimizing frequency interruptions.

Keypads

A wireless keypad can be installed outside of the garage to operate the garage door opener remotely. Like remote controls, keypads operate on a frequency rather than a wire. Only after a designated series of numbers is pressed on the keypad will the signal transmit to the receiver of the garage door opener. The series of numbers are chosen by the home owner during the programming stage of the installation and can always be changed at the home owners will. Some keypads even allow for temporary passwords to be programmed for the use of guests to gain access to the garage. A garage door opener keypad is one of those accessories in life that once you have had one, you cannot do without one. If your vehicle remains parked in the driveway most of the time, and not in the garage, police officers strongly advise not keeping a remote control programmed to gain easy access to your home inside it for thieves to target. Using a keypad with your own personal security code is the recommended method of operating your garage door opener if you are not parking inside the garage. Like remote controls, keypads are make and model specific, and because of the many off-brand garage door openers installed these days, not all universal keypads are universal.

Deluxe Wall Buttons

A wall button located inside the garage, usually near the entry door of the garage and house, is installed with a wire connecting it to the garage door opener. This button’s primary function is to initiate the movement of the garage door opener, but manufactures have also made other deluxe wall buttons with buttons and switches to instruct other functions from the operator. Deluxe wall buttons usually have a separate button for turning the garage door opener’s light bulbs on and off at your will. Another button or switch usually located on the deluxe wall button is designed to turn on and off the garage door opener’s remote locking mechanism. This “lock” button will disable any wireless transmitters, including remote controls, keypads, vehicle Homelinks, and any other radio transmitted devices. Inside wall buttons and some security system receivers are wired directly into the garage door opener and will still operate the garage door if the button is pushed. Some deluxe wall buttons have the ability to program remotes, some have clocks, some have motion sensors that activate the light bulbs on the garage door opener and some display the temperature of the garage. Some deluxe wall buttons made today can even diagnose garage door and garage door opener problems.

MyQ Gateway Receiver

Homelink/Car2U Repeater

A majority of vehicles made in the past fifteen years have come equipped with their own set of buttons that can be programmed to operate garage door openers. Whether your vehicle comes equipped with a Car2U brand or the much more commonly used Homelink brand, if the vehicle is older than 2014 it will not be compatible with any of the newer Chamberlain garage door openers that have the MyQ technology without the use of a repeater. A Car2U repeater or a Homelink repeater is plugged in and programmed to the garage door opener and then serves as a receiver to the signal being sent by its brand specific vehicle button. If the three buttons in your vehicle designed to operate garage door openers has an LED light above each button, you have a Car2U transmitter and need a Car2U repeater. If the three buttons have just one singleLED light, usually inside a garage door looking logo, then the brand is Homelink and you’ll need a Homelink repeater. You can also refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual to find out which brand transmitter it uses to operate your garage door.

NYLON BALL-BEARING ROLLERS

The most common product we sell are these rollers. Most builders install rollers that are plastic and do not have ball-bearings. As a result, 75 percent of our calls have something to do with the dragging and wearing down of these plastic rollers. Whether the problem is a stressed out operator, or a door out of its track, the problem usually originated from bad rollers. Our nylon ball-bearing rollers significantly quiet down loud and unsafe doors, and greatly increase the life expectancy of your motor by eliminating the stress that is being created by the door not rolling easily enough. Each roller has eleven ball bearings and a special busing inside of them that doesn’t allow the weight of the door to cause them to pivot like other inferior ball bearing rollers sold at Home Depot or Lowes. The nylon coating eliminates the irritating noise of metal scratching on metal, and the whining sound that plastic rollers tend to make while dragging through the track. Once we have given the door the opportunity to finally roll up and down without the emergency brakes on, we can adjust the sensitivity in your operators force settings to make the motor much more safe and sensitive to hitting obstructions.

UNIVERSAL KEYPADS

Universal keypads are a safe and convenient way to enter your garage. They are a Chamberlain product, but will work with almost all brands of operators. The wireless entry is installed somewhere close but on the outside of the garage, usually on the wood framing of the garage. Not only does the keypad allow you secured access into the garage, you may also set temporary code if you are out of town and need to give someone else access to the garage. Another convenience of the keypad is if you leave your vehicle in the driveway and don’t want to have a remote control in your vehicle because it could allow access to unwanted guests, you can not have a remote at all in your car and simply just use the keypad to come in and out. There is absolutely no way someone can use the keypad as an entry without first knowing your personal code that you personally set.

UNIVERSAL KEYCHAIN REMOTES

Just like they sound, they are a nifty little remote small enough to carry on your keychain. Again, this is a better idea then leaving a remote control on your sun visor in your vehicle for anyone to break in and use. The universal keychain remote is made by chamberlain and compatible for most all major brands of Garage Door Operators.

MYQ RECEIVERS

This external receiver kit will allow access to your garage from anywhere in the world from your cell phone. Made by Chamberlain, this product is universal to most major brands of operators and is considered the leader of its form of technology. With the MYQ app that you will install on your phone you will now able to see if you remembered to close your garage door after you have already driven away; and close it from your phone if you had not already.

DELUX WALL BUTTONS

Deluxe wall buttons can have different features that give you the ability to control different functions on the garage door opener. Most have the ability to switch the motor light off and on for when you just need a little more light in the garage. Most also have a button or switch that locks out in transitions from remote controls that may be outside in a car. The lock feature also enables the keypad or your homelink remote button in your vehicle to operate the motor. Some deluxe wall buttons have the ability to program other remote controls from the wall button itself, and some deluxe wall buttons have a timer option on it to automatically close the garage door if it has been opened for 1 minute, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. Some other deluxe keypads even display the time and weather.

LASER PARKING ASSISTANT

This is a devise installed onto the ceiling of your garage that points a red laser beam down to a designated location on your windshield to indicate when to stop pulling forward in your garage to prevent driving through a wall.

LIFTMASTER SURGE PROTECTORS

This device should protect the circuit board inside your garage door opener unit from costly damages brought on by electrical power surges and small electrical storms.

MULTI BUTTON REMOTE CONTROLS

Program your gate and second garage door to the same remote control that you use to operate your main garage door with these handy three button remotes. Unfortunately, these three button and four button remote controls just come with Chamberlain specific technology, but we do carry two button universal remotes that will work for most all major brands of operators.

REPLACEMENT BOTTOM SEAL

Most builders install a bottom seal that is 2.5″ to 3.5″ wide at the bottom of the garage door to keep things from coming under the door. Over time, this seal shrinks and/or deteriorates leaving gaps under the door for critters and leaves to make their unwanted access into your garage. We carry and install a 4.5″ wide bottom seal that we strategically tuck inside itself so that it can not shrink over time. The extra width covers more area just in case the foundation isn’t perfectly level, and ensures that it will be a long time before it will ever need replaced.

PERIMETER SEAL

Otherwise know as “Jamb Seal”, is an attractive way to seal the top and sides of your garage door from the outside. It is installed onto the outside framing of the garage door opening and works as a trim board with a vinyl flap that covers any gaps along the top and sides of the door. They come is white, brown, and almond to match the three most common color garage doors.
